TODAYonline | World | World in Brief | Myanmar junta figure to chair election body

“A top member of Myanmar’s junta was appointed head of the country’s new Election Commission yesterday, a lawmaker said, as the military continued to consolidate its grip on power after widely condemned elections.

Mr Tin Aye was a lieutenant-general and the sixth-ranking member of Myanmar’s junta until he retired from his military post to make a successful run for the Lower House in the November elections. He gave no reason for unexpectedly resigning his parliamentary seat on Wednesday, just three weeks after being sworn in.

The House Speaker announced yesterday that Mr Tin Aye would head the seven-member Union Election Commission, said Mr Khin Shwe, an Upper House lawmaker from the military-backed United Solidarity and Development Party.” AP
